Give’em hell, give’em hell, OU SUCKS!!!
You had probably assumed that a Texas obsessed, Longhorn loving girl like myself had gone to the Red River Rivalry every year since she was born. Well surprise, this year was my first trip to the Cotton Bowl and the State Fair of Texas *gasps in Texan* Fun fact: the last time my parents went to TX-OU was in 2000 (in case you were wondering Texas lost 63-14 and it was freezing and raining). Coincidence that I am 19 years old and it took them 18 years to return, I think not.
We woke up at the crack of dawn, Caitlin curled my hair (because I am curling iron challenged), I put on my boots and we were out the door: Fair Park or bust. My first “omg is this really what people do” moment of the day was parking in a random man’s backyard. I am not joking. His cute little granddaughters flagged us into the driveway and we parked behind the house. Like excuse me what, dear Fair Park, have you ever heard of parking garages? Thankfully the walk from the backyard to the gate wasn’t too far. Side note: the horses for the Dallas Mounted Police are a lot more intimidating than Oxford Mounted, like I swear they were twice the size of OPD’s horses #JustTexasThings
Over the past year, I have become a firm believer in the SEC being the best college football conference in the country, perhaps even in the world. I hate to say it, but TX-OU has them all beat. I had never seen anything quite like that half crimson, half burnt orange stadium. Literally there were an equal amount of Texas and OU fans, for every “Texas Fight” there was a “Boomer Sooner” from the other side.
I am not always the biggest fan of staying all 60 (the heat, the stress of having an inconsistent team, etc), but last weekend I was not going to leave that stadium until it was over. Okay actually that’s a lie, we were gonna leave early, but we ended up staying the whole time. Here’s the tea: Dad jinxed us during the 4th quarter, “One more good set of drives,” he said, “One more Texas touchdown (to add to our 3 score lead)”… OU proceeded to score 3x in a row to tie it up. It made for an exciting game to say the least and shoutout to Dicker the Kicker for not making us go into overtime.
After the game we proceeded to do your typical State Fair of Texas activities: took a picture in front of Big Tex, went to the car show (a personal favorite of Mom), and ate all the fried foods. I hope to be back next year because I didn’t get a chance to try fried Frito pie bites and I am truly intrigued with the concept. Dear DKR, can you please get a Fletcher’s corndog stand the size of the one at the fairgrounds, please and thank you.
When asked about this weekend, there was only one way to describe it: perfect. I checked two items off my Texas bucket list and it is a memory that will stick with me forever. Plus, I saw Taylor Swift in concert a few hours after the game which was a nice touch. Dad, I know you said you probably should have brought us to TX-OU earlier in life, but I think you did it just right. Hook’em y’all🤘🏻
