Texas My Texas

It has been 50 days since I have seen my lovely state. In honor of my return to the greatest state in the country, here are the 50 things I missed most about Texas.

  1. Tex-Mex, trust me it’s not the same outside those state lines.
  2. Whataburger, this was my last meal in Texas and it will certainly be my first when I get home.
  3. Amy’s Ice Cream, Marble Slab Creamery ain’t cutting it.
  4. The color burnt orange, apparently it’s not a popular color down here.
  5. That feeling of solidarity when you sing Deep in the Heart of Texas in public.
  6. High school football, there is nothing quite like those Texas Friday night lights.
  7. Homecoming mums, non-Texans are very confused by the concept.
  8. Breakfast tacos, you would be shocked how many people don’t know the joy of potatoes, eggs, cheese and salsa wrapped in a warm tortilla.
  9. Real queso, they call it cheese dip…
  10. Matthew McConaughey, in my dreams he is sitting in a box suite at the Vaught smiling on the screen.
  11. Bevo, trying to describe how cute a longhorn steer is to non-Texans isn’t easy.
  12. The people, Mississippians are very nice but Texan hospitality is like no other.
  13. Small towns, I can name all of the ones between Austin and Dallas, here I got nothing. PSA: there is a Houston, Mississippi.
  14. Buc-ee’s, you have not roadtripped until you have stopped at every beaver sign along the way.
  15. HEB, nothing but respect for MY grocery store.
  16. Blue Bell, not to worry they sell Blue Bell here but something about eating it in Texas makes it taste better.
  17. Texas BBQ, Memphis BBQ doesn’t hold a candle to it.
  18. State pride, Texans love Texas more than Kanye loves Kanye.
  19. Torchy’s Tacos, there better be a Tipsy Chick with my name on it when I get home.
  20. Mount Bonnell, the coolest set of stairs on the side of a hill I have ever had the privilege of walking up.
  21. Willie Nelson, he’s every Texans grandpa.
  22. South Congress, it has been way too long since I have taken a picture in front of a mural.
  23. Sunsets, nothing beats a Texas sunset whether its over the Hill Country or the Austin skyline.
  24. Village Bakery, shoutout to my dad for bring me a dozen pecan rolls and cherry kolaches last month, which I ate all by myself.
  25. Dallas Cowboys, How bout them Cowboys!
  26. The original Neiman Marcus, I do so love my Neiman Marcus.
  27. Big Red, now how am I supposed to enjoy an ice cream float without Big Red?
  28. Bluebonnets, mix those with the rolling Hill Country, a perfect Texas sunset and a longhorn and you have yourself a vision of heaven.
  29. The Alamo, REMEMBER THE ALAMO!!
  30. Freebirds, despite its California roots this is a Texas favorite.
  31. The sheer size of Texas, I love watching people’s eyes pop out of their head when I say the longest part of my drive is getting out of Texas.
  32. Dirty’s, I’ll have a cheeseburger with tots and extra grease, oh and a frat boy on the side.
  33. Fort Worth Stockyards, Cooper’s BBQ and cute cowboys, count me in!
  34. Kerbey Lane Café, home of the iconic Paris, Texas Platter (migas and French toast!!)
  35. Cowboy boots, they are always an acceptable accessory for any outfit.
  36. Thundercloud Subs, better than any Subway will ever be.
  37. The summertime heat, it’s fun living on the surface of the sun because then the world revolves around you.
  38. Town Lake, even if you aren’t active being down there makes you feel like maybe you could go for a run or go kayaking.
  39. All of the zoos, except Austin’s, squirrels are not exotic animals.
  40. George Strait, the King of Country.
  41. Tyler’s t-shirts, an essential in any Norwest Austin girl’s closet.
  42. South Congress bats, not everyone can say they have a steady bat colony in their hometown.
  43. Monument Cafe, best breakfast in Georgetown.
  44. Port Aransas, there for all your spring break, summer, anytime of the year vacation needs.
  45. NOT I-35, I would rather stop at every light on Jackson Ave for the rest of my life over being stuck on I-35 any day of the week.
  46. Walburg, German food and polka music make for great Friday nights.
  47. Bob Bullock Museum, the best field trip a 4th grader could ever take.
  48. My friends, whether they are still at Savio (Go Eagles) or are at some great Texas universities (Hook’em Horns, Gig’em, Eat’em Up Cats, Go Pirates?, Wreck’em, etc).
  49. My family, from Austin to West to Marble Falls to Tyler, I’m not sure what I would do without them.
  50. My home, home is where the heart is and this girl’s heart is in Texas.
